Hiking in Moab – Mary Jane Canyon

There are many areas in Moab worth hiking, but hiking Mary Jane Canyon has got to be near the top of the list. This beautiful, secluded hike is tucked away in the Moab desert. This particular trail isn’t really a trail at all. There aren’t specific markings that show where to walk, so hikers normally follow Professor Creek.

Professor Creek is the guide for a Mary Jane Canyon hike. It originates in the La Salle Mountains and flows through the desert and into the Colorado River. It offers some spectacular views and unique photo opportunities. Keep an eye out for the wildlife that inhabits this area. You may get a chance to see lizards, snakes, toads and possibly deer.

A hike in Mary Jane Canyon is a truly beautiful experience. As you walk along next to Professor Creek, the walls of the canyon begin to narrow to between 10 and 20 feet in width. The walls also increase to 100 to 150 feet in height. Be sure to admire these walls and how water and erosion has shaped this land over the years.

The highlight of any Mary Jane Canyon hike is the waterfall at the end. You will hear it before you see it, but you may still need to catch your breath after you turn the corner and catch your first glimpse of this spectacular waterfall. If you bring your camera, the waterfall offers an amazing photo opportunity not only because of its beauty, but you also capture the accomplishment of this hike.

Be sure to bring proper supplies. You will be walking through the creek at points so you may want waterproof shoes or at least a change. Water is essential in the desert. Bring enough so you can take in a least a quart per hour. Since the trail is not marked, bring a map and compass or hire a guide.
